I remember my dad told me once he started out roofing in the Northwestern high school alumni baltimore md class of 1978 shirt and I will buy this early 70’s for $4.25 an hour. I believe an ounce of gold was pegged $1 for 1/38 an ounce back then. Some quick maths and that adjusts to starting at $201/hr in todays money. both great grandparents had state jobs (assuming grandma was in a state-run college) & each, i betcha, have great pensions. getting a governmental job even now guarantees a pretty good income when you’re older. yes – these days – pensions are hard to come by but are still available if you look. OP doesn’t say what kind of job her & her husband have but they can always still try to get a civil servant job as usually you can get a pension after 20yrs. My neighbour used to work as printer (printing newspapers) and his wife was working at a gardening centre. They both live in giant 5 bed house. He also collects vintage bicycles and motor bicycles. I have not even a clue how they could afford to heat their house, it was super toasty.

They both probably have amazing pensions and have had all those years to pay off their loans. They’re also older so they don’t have to worry about their life savings as much. My grandpa was a window washer and my grandma was a hairdresser. When my mom sold the Northwestern high school alumni baltimore md class of 1978 shirt and I will buy this apartment she inherited (part of a co-op) it sold for nearly half a million dollars. On top of that she inherited a few 100k in stocks. My grandparents never wanted for anything. They raised 3 kids. They traveled the world. Also, my mother told me when she started teaching, first job, she was earning 20k with benefits. In todays dollars that’s nearly 75k apparently. we have someone in life who we can use as an example for this. yet it is getting annoying that we keep joking about and not actually making a change. yes he’s boomers they had it all. got out before the market crash. we talk but we have to change the dialogue of it all. i live in the midwest too, actually we are neighbors.
