I seem to recall reading about how these women were sought out for medical advice, due to them having extensive knowledge of what kind of plants and herbs worked best to cure/ease various ailments. I suspect that them being accused of witchcraft was due to misogyny, pure and simple. Seems too simplistic, but there. Witchcraft accusation was a political strategy of inquisition to despossess widows of their property, wealth and business. With so many free land and low number of workers, many people ran from Feudal lands to free land and free cities, causing the crisis of Feudalism. The church was the biggest landlord of Europe. The political goal was to “steal” the land of free peasants and repopulate Europe to gain back the work force of before the pandemy. The method was literally to domesticate women, by forbidding women to have property, income, business, etc, and by legalizing rape. The supposed witches were elders widow who kept their ilegal business, income and property illegally. And usually women did it together as a community of support of each other. Accusing them of witchcraft, because their common practices of botanical garden for nursering and “men work” was this polític of forcing women to depend 100% on a man to survive and then dedicate a life only, or mostly, to have children and rise them. But elders can’t be pregnated and it is difficult for elders to marry again, so their illegal activities where most for their own survival, but in many occasions for political reasons too.
