I’d argue they’re all suffering from years of abuse. So unless they get plenty of mental health assistance, how are they supposed to assimilate successfully?!? Just sayin! Is this a joke? If 80% of people don’t regret going to S. Korea then I call this a wild success. After all nearly 1 in 5 people don’t like change. See what I did there. Am I the No smoking judge dredd artwork classic shirt and I will buy this only one seeing the glass as 4/5ths full? Considering what these people have been through, I’m not surprised at least a few regret their decision “80% of N. Korean defectors say they are happy coming to S. Korea”. Perspective. Which headline gets more clicks? South Korea is… well it’s pretty shitty in a bunch of ways at the moment. Nasty sexism problem dividing the younger generations, horrible work culture and politicians who think it needs to be worse and some uh, pretty interesting religious groups. To these people the south seemed like an incredibly better life from afar. I suppose they’ve found that it’s just shitty in different ways. Yeah well if your neighbors killed you, raped your wives, and used your children for target practice you might be a bit unfriendly to the assholes too. I feel the same away. My neighbors – if you are reading this – fix your fudging fence, you still haven’t repaired it. At least in the capitalist hellhole you can appeal for social change, vote for different people, and leave without being shot.

The issue isn’t that South Korea isn’t much better than North Korea, it’s that it’s an incredibly large change in lifestyle. I have trouble sleeping at night. The bed is too big. I have bad dreams, like I’m falling. I wake up scared. Sometimes it takes me a while to remember where I am. There’s a lot of people that miss being in prison after they are free because everything is so different and normal things become a challenge. I think that’s completly normal. I can’t imagine what it must be like for a N.Korean integrating into S.Korea or any capitalist/free-market country. All of us who grew up in say…North America, Europe, and even China were born, bred, and taught how to struggle and compete in order to earn our place in society. We’re taught how to seize opportunities, exploit weaknesses, and defend/avoid scams.
