Because some people want to donate. When you donate you fell great about yourself and someone has a chance to receive a small portion of your donation. It’s not about who facilitates donations. Zero sum game, they call this. As that clerk, why are you yelling at us? We have a job to do, and you getting cranky with us for doing it isn’t gonna make it any better. Edit: Not saying I agree with the donation thing, but since I work in customer service, it never fails to irritate me to see shit like this. I don’t think they’re complaining specifically about the clerks though, just the automatic checkout screens. Lot easier to get vocally mad at a screen since those aren’t people just doing their jobs While I agree that grocery stores should donate money, they often DO donate to charities. Atleast where I live. And honestly; just because a company donates doesn’t mean that you “shouldn’t” donate. Not to force anyone to donate to charities, but what would be such a bad thing about both the grocery store AND the customer to donate? It’s not like charities ever get “too much” money for curing cancer. But no one should feel forced to donate if they can’t afford it. Every penny helps. If you don’t want to that’s fine. I imagine things like this add quite a bit to the pool of resources so it’s not so bad to hear about. I’m so tired of the panhandling at checkout, it’s always a guilt trip like, “Guess you don’t want to support youth. Do you hate kids or something? Jerk”

How many grocery stores can you name that have multi billion dollar profit margins outside of Whole Foods? Most profit margins for grocery stores are razor gonna. The corporation makes a huge donation of their customer’s money, not their own money. Personally I only say “yes” if I know the cause is a good one without massive overhead in the charity organization. The company doesn’t get any of the donation, nor do they get a tax break. They’re just advertising on behalf of the charity. Cash generated from donations like this hit the entity’s balance sheet only. Cash collected is a liability. Forwarding said cash to the charitable entity relieves the liability. There is zero income statement impact and none of the cash raised in this manner is recorded as revenue or or expense. Y’know some companies, like where I work, make 3 cents on the dollar. Most of the money goes back to employees and to the people who actually made the products. You’re not required to donate. Just say no and move on. Dont they take your money, and put it under their corporation name so they have that domatiom on record for themselves or something?
