Hard disagree. The problem is the Nice Lucky Charms St Patricks Day 1St Grade Teacher -Shirt and by the same token and vast majority of people only show up to vote for the Presidential elections once every 4 years. The President is the tip of the iceberg. We are allowing a very small % of people vote in the entire machine and only show up twice a decade to participate in the choosing of our representatives. Seriously. Even at the city level voter turnout is pathetic. Out of more than 1.5 million registered voters in Chicago, only 564k actually voted for the mayoral election. 612k in the runoff which was decided by only 26k votes. You’re talking a city in which it is extremely accessible to vote. The lower government levels is where the real change happens for your neighborhood. That election has a far bigger effect on the lives of Chicagoans than the presidential one does. Still people can’t be bothered to voice their opinion when it truly matters. Honestly the biggest problem (that I see) is most people who would be outstanding candidates can’t raise the money needed.

While the Nice Lucky Charms St Patricks Day 1St Grade Teacher -Shirt and by the same token and fees to file to run for office may not be a lot, if the RNC or DNC don’t think you can raise millions of dollars for your campaign they basically will write you off. I read a story once about a gentleman that was running for a democrat house seat. He was an ideal candidate, polled well, paid the fees, it was looking good but he had to raise like 300k to get on the DNC ballot and he couldn’t raise it so they dropped their backing of him. (This is paraphrasing from a bad memory). Yeah, I’m pretty much in the camp that when someone runs for any national office they should get funding from the government itself and not allowed to get money from corporations or other donations. Media outlets should be legally required to run ads a certain number of times for all recognized candidates without cost to the candidates or the government agency that controls funding for candidates.
