The key that is missing from both those scenarios is developing skills. Jobs and colleges don’t bring a good life, skills do My path was to teach myself computer programming in middle school and high school back in the 1980s, skip college and begin working as a developer in 1989, and keep getting better at it over the next 34+ years. Today, I’m 53 years old, gross over $200k/year, and work entirely from home on a rural property in Florida. What little college I did attend, I paid for as I went. No debt. I am extremely lucky, although it didn’t feel that way at first. I was raised by a struggling single mom without a HS diploma, who also suffered a significant hearing loss, and by extension, limited earning power. She worked in the IT department of our local county government. As a teen, I was actively rejected by my peers, so solitary pursuits were all that were available to me. My mom’s boss noticed my fascination with computers, and gently introduced me to computer programming.

I spent the Nice dubois beavers high school alumni shirt moreover I will buy this rest of my childhood exploring coding on every platform I could get my hands on. By the time I graduated high school, I had already been coding for several years, so I went straight to work INSTEAD OF COLLEGE. Then I just kept learning and working in software development. With each passing year, it became harder to justify going to college, because I was already earning the money. Now I’m about 10 years away from retirement, I still love my profession, and I’m thrilled with how my life has turned out.
