My mom’s rule growing up when she finally left my dad was that I had to at least try it, just a few bites, if I really didn’t like it I could have something else but no dessert if I’m not going to be eating a full balanced meal. I don’t get it either. As a kid I loved most veg, especially spinach, carrots, beans and cabbage. But I didn’t like pumpkin or beet. Every one used to try to force me to eat pumpkin and beet like it was life or death, even some people who didn’t eat it themselves! Suffice to say, my kids get to choose what they eat and I don’t force them to eat what they don’t want. I do encourage them to try something if they haven’t had it before. My kids hate cooked veg, but will steal frozen veg out of the freezer or eat most of it raw when given the chance. When we used to have a veggie garden, they used to spend all day picking and eating straight from the plants, but put that same thing into a pot and it’s suddenly poisen And yes, some days they don’t want food, and they just eat snacks, and that’s ok too, as long as they are not hungry after If you serve it to yourself, eat what you took. If someone else served it, eat until you are full. Take the leftovers for later if you liked it.

But kids are hard sometimes. And some refuse to eat during daylight hours unless they are watched closely. I hate those things. It took a long time for me to learn that it’s okay to refuse food. My mom would literally glare at me from across the table until I took a bite. It would have been considered extremely offensive if I said something like “Yuck!” or even “No thank you!” because those foods were a labor of love. And we had to eat it all. My grandmother would poke our bellies and say “Nope! You still have some room over here. Go finish your plate.”
