I always start with small portions, especially if it is a new food. But we do strongly encourage, and even have consequences, for not trying healthy foods. Consequences = You sure aren’t getting dessert or a snack between now and breakfast, mister (my son is the dietary nightmare). Because they refuse to eat healthy foods and demand sweets instead. If you say “fine, don’t eat it if you’re not hungry” they’re just going to end up hungry or malnourished. It’s the same as saying “fine, stay up late then” and then being exhausted and unable to focus during school. Kids don’t work off logic, there’s some things you just can’t explain to them until they’re older.

The way OP put it, kids eat into they are full and then parents forced them to eat everything even though they are already full. If you ask me, it is important to get your kids to eat their veggies, but thinking back to my own childhood, I remember my parents being a bit hard on it sometimes, and I wouldn’t encourage that. Much of the aversion to veggies is that they’re often badly prepared or seasoned. My son loves veggies because they’re flavorful. It is a battle of wills between an over controlling woman who must have everything her way and her downtrodden child.
