Water bottles full of vodka, sun up to sun down. He can’t function without alcohol. He got a DUI and blew a .41 BAC. He should be dead. He was sober for two years, and once he had a beer, fell right back into it. Sometimes I keep him company on Discord and we’ll play games. I’m one of the few people he has left. He sometimes blacks out and falls to the floor. He doesn’t listen to me; he won’t listen to anyone. I’m watching my brother die because he doesn’t want to stop. I know someone who is 33 and has a 3% chance of living right now, from being a heavy drinker for years. Their liver and kidneys are both failing, with surgeries for hemorrhaging that aren’t stopping the bleeding. Been in the hospital for a couple months now as well. If you are wanting to change, try to see if you can find any support groups in your area, or ask your gp if they know of any. I wish you the best of luck. You have a really tough battle ahead of you. But recognising that you have an issue that needs to stop is a good first step!

I’ve never been a drinker, but in my 20’s (I’m now 32) I smoked cigarettes, I enjoyed it, it was relaxing to kick back on a cool night and puff a cigarette. Despite how much I enjoyed it I knew that if I continued to smoke I would likely have serious health issues later in life. What is it about life that makes it unbearable? Figure that out and you might figure out how to want to quit drinking. Hey OP, I work in alcohol and other drugs field, and it’s totally normal and valid for you to feel this way. Many of my clients were ambivalent about changing – they recognise the need to reduce/stop drinking and also afraid they are going to miss out during social events and a way to relieve stress. I recommend you speaking to an AOD counsellor or speak to an alcohol support hotline if you could. And then figure out your goals from there (it can be reducing to a couple beers a week or to be abstinent from it, unless you have any medical conditions that might benefit you from stopping entirely!)
