I have tough times naming characters some times, so I named two after my daughters. I also named one after a female character in a book I loved when I was younger. I mostly do it in 3rd person games if I have to look at an ass most of the New England Patriots beasts of the gridiron shirt it is in the first place but game than I will look at something pleasant I don’t know what it says about me, but when I play Mass Effect, I play as a paragon male Shepherd (I’m a dude) and then again as a renegade FemShep, almost exclusively. as someone that plays mostly competitive PvP games, the character design philosophies that best align with my “playstyle” are often given to women. Sakura from street fighter is a technical “weaker” version of Ryu that relies a lot more on set-up pressure where the male shotos often have more straight forward tools, with the tradeoff being insane options when properly spaced and allowed to get her game going. basically a “cute” version of the main guy. Loba from apex legends is a supportive character who can loot things from afar. basically catwoman aka a cat burglar lol. Sometimes it’s just the aesthetics of the character. In d4 for example my sorc will be fem, as will my rogue. Barb and druid will likely be male. Sometimes it’s just to mix things up in games where most characters are going to be male, or in a game I’ve maybe already played as one gender.

Lately if there’s a game I want to share with my daughter, I’ll make a female character just to get her more into it as I’d imagine it’s more relatable and welcoming for her. Lot of times they are slimmer character models, so for FPS games it gives a slight visual advantage. Some games like apex legends actually have different hitboxes between characters. I also don’t mind having an occasional dump truck for a change. Some games offer smaller hit boxes for females, which is a plus, all in all though I play as a female because evie Frye is badass. 1.Because other man are stupid and give free stuff and needlessly help . Most girls I know doesn’t even like to be carried throughout a game . My current partner plays lots of different characters, including women, but it’s mostly for the New England Patriots beasts of the gridiron shirt it is in the first place but variety of a new look. My bf says it’s because he’d rather look at a women all day while playing instead of a dude, and he likes picking the outfits more It depends on the game for me. If it is something like Control or Tomb Raider, it is because that is who the protagonist is. When I played Left 4 Dead, the game engine tried to follow all of the classic tropes. Zoe had THE WORST AI and was always the first one down. When I started playing as her, I was doing better in fights because I essentially had an extra player every time the horde came for us. I don’t have anything to add, but as a woman who games (I only play Skyrim, and I play it obsessively) this thread is so damn wholesome. My favorite character I’ve ever created was a purple Argonian named Lizzy Hist-guire. She does love a good dress.
