Less important, but you can’t just wave them away. People who complain about algo questions are typically very bad at them and won’t pass. I could pretty confidently go for most DS&A interviews (except for the most competitive companies) because I’ve been applying specifically for companies which happen to ask those and the general ideas are difficult to forget. Same, most of the weight for me has been on those other interview types. Coding interviews have been mostly relatively straightforward questions, and I think it’s valid both as a basic check of “yes, you can code” as well as style and communication. I don’t think I’ve ever been asked about RB-trees or NP-complete problems in an interview. Every once in a blue moon I’ll get hit with something that requires remembering a more obscure algorithm but it’s the exception not the norm. I don’t think I’ve ever been asked a “length of telephone line” type question in a swe interview.
