It felt like someone else’s writing, like the fourth Millennium novel. The diagnosis came in late 2007. Making Money (2007) and Unseen Academicals (2009) are two of my favorite books in the series. I’m not sure where I Shall Wear Midnight (2010) falls, mostly because Tiffany Aching books are YA and have deliberately different tones. Snuff (2011) is the one that really felt different. Raising Steam as well (actually to a lesser extent), and I’ve never been able to bring myself to read Shepherd’s Crown. The Long Earth books that he has author’s credits on feel nearly absent of Terry’s influence. I don’t think there’s another author/celebrity’s passing that’s ever come as close to making me as sad his did.

Terry was famously digital. When asked why he wrote with six monitors, he replied “I can’t fit any more on my desk”. In a year or two we’ll get a surprise “From the Mind of Terry Prachett….”, and it will even be read in his voice via AI. It’s been almost a decade. There is a decent chance whoever would have been in a position to get those records has already retired. Pratchett specifically knew his publisher, and felt compelled to put the steamrolling clause in his will. That tells us everything we need to know about publishers. Late terry adopter here. The funnest smartest satirist you will ever read. People think I’m insane cause I’m laughing out loud to guards, guards on audible.
