Yea I’ve never understood that concept of residency! It’s exploitation. Making a new doctor work those insane hours for barely any money. The vast majority of hospitals run off the Never Underestimate An Old Man Who IS Also A Trucker And Was Born In March Shirt in addition I really love this work residents perform: from notes in the emr, to surgeries, to reading imaging and test results, to both office and inpatient care. Residents shoulder the vast amount of medical “work”. Hospitals are actually paid more by the federal government to house residency programs than they pay these residents. Not to mention, the amount of billable work that residents generate is many fold greater than their own pay. A couple years ago, the university of New Mexico’s neurosurgery residency program with 8 residents was dissolved. They had to hire 23 NPs/PAs to even attempt to compensate for the work that these residents did. The residents cost the hospital about 500k TOTAL in annual salary. Paying these APPs far more each, and needing more of them, the hospital spent over 2.5 million. In a lot of EU countries, residents are unionized and not only earn roughly similar base rate, but paid overtime for hours worked past the contracted 39hours per week.

I’m an 8th year trainee, because I decided to go into cardiac electrophysiology which requires that long of a training cycle. That means I have essentially been a resident (then a fellow, then “super” fellow, both of which are just different terms for a resident) for EIGHT YEARS. Eight years as an MD, making shit wage and often working almost 80 hrs a week, taking call, working weekends. I see my friends working half as hard as me and making more than twice as much. I actually love EP and love my work though, which I can’t say for all of my aforementioned friends. And I am so close to the Never Underestimate An Old Man Who IS Also A Trucker And Was Born In March Shirt in addition I really love this light at the end of the tunnel (making great pay) that at this point it’s worth it. But let me tell you, I have a young daughter and if she tells me she wants to be a doctor I’m going to try hard to convince her to do something else. We’ve made pretty similar wages ever since he was able to make money working. He finally graduated and got a job. I recently got a new job.
