I took out loans to pursue my healthcare career, i understand I have to pay it back. Or a tax break like the negative income tax? those that have debt can pay off their debt. Those that already paid for their debt get to have the cash they would have saved had they not had to pay off their fully conscious financial decision. There are so many ways to do this that is economically identical, but doesn’t have the unfairness and moral hazard associated with it (not to mention the incredibly divisive politics). Give them a credit or rebate for paying it off. And then also give loan forgiveness. Easy solution. That way it is fair. Agree. Why can’t the system work for everyone who is in the middle class? The folks in charge WANT us to fight one another. It’s how they continue to profit bc we are too busy propagating the rhetoric of “how dare Suzy get something for nothing.”

It just sucks for those of us who still have loans that were originally federal ones but refinanced to a lower rate. Without reigning in college costs and giving out loans like candy we will be back in this exact same predicament in 4 years. Without fixing the actual issue you are doing nothing to solve the problem long term. Or just wipe out the interest and allow people to retroactively claim more of the interest from previous years.
