I know why things shook out the Never back down I am a Uconn fan now and forever shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this way they did, but on appearance alone, it’s crazy that the super-futuristic sr71 is retired and the janky as hell looking U2 is still in regularly use. I don’t have a link but I can second him on the U-2 Dragonlady part – some photos taken from U-2s are available Not my favorite source, but the story is widely known. FAA data showed the Rivet Joint and Combat Sent planes shadowing the balloon. The Pentagon even tweeted a picture of the balloon taken from the cockpit of the U-2. Learning about how balloons work can’t be anywhere close to as important as not having a foreign government intercept our communications directly above our entire nuclear arsenal We used a 1950s frame spyplane to follow the balloon the whole time. They intercepted “military signals,” but not likely anything useful or that you couldn’t get sitting in a pickup truck nearby the base, since we were well aware of the balloons existence likely before it even passed over US territory. The U-2 has been continuously updated and upgraded to remain in service. Characterizing it as a “1950’s spy plane” hilariously underestimates the capabilities of the aircraft. We have extraordinary surveillance and SIGINT capabilities that are enhanced by the use of the modernized U-2. I don’t really understand if this was the expected “limited additional value over spy satellites” or if this is substantially more than it was expected to be able to gather. Also feels a bit odd to go with this headline when later it says that it would have been able to gather more if not for the efforts to not let it gather more?

It was likely designed to pick up radio signals, not imagery, that cannot be obtained via satellites. Similar to how you can scan an internet network and find connected devices, a spy balloon could have a Stingray type of device for electronic surveillance that simulates a cell phone tower and retrieves hardware and phone info from every device in the Never back down I am a Uconn fan now and forever shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this area. This info could then be used to determine who works on the site, spoof military devices, eavesdrop on calls, etc. It could have also been picking up IDs of gps devices, which could be used to specifically track site workers via gps satellites, and secure two-way radio transmissions, in an attempt to retrieve the secure trunking codes and decode encrypted radio transmissions. The balloon may have also had LiDAR and GPR capabilities to map out things on the site their satellites cannot detect. Odds are, people who worked there were told to turn off cell phones, gps devices, and radios during this time. The U-2 spy plane was used to monitor the signals and then was probably used to jam them.
