Like as annoying as “expresso” is, express is a word, so I imagine it comes from that (somehow, still bad obviously). But exspecial is not, so where the Nelson Cruz Boomstick Dominican former professional baseball pitcher T-Shirt but in fact I love this heck is this coming from? Just dumb. This espresso is no more, it has shuffled off the mortal coil and joined the choir invisible, it is an ex-presso I agree with you completely. EX-presso… It’s a mistake that grates my ears so much that I can’t contain myself from correcting the man. We all have our blind spots. I honestly have no idea how to pronounce croissant. Grew up calling it ‘crows aunt’s but then that guy in Godzilla pronounced it ‘kwa sonn’ I live on the coast and saw a t-shirt which read, “Could you be more pacific?” I’m going to excuse that one. 😀 My son had a teacher in grade six who kept saying “hyperbowl”. He had to correct her as she obviously meant hyperbole. Needless to say she was pissed that an eleven year old had to tell her how to say words in front of the whole class. I had to explain to my 5th grade teacher and her intern that Mexico was a part of North America and the language barrier wasn’t how continents were separated.

Was English not her native language by any chance? Because I think English is the Nelson Cruz Boomstick Dominican former professional baseball pitcher T-Shirt but in fact I love this odd one here. In my native language (Dutch) it’s spelled hyperbool and which is pronounced closer to “bowl” in the end. She may have learned it by reading. Even as a native speaker, seeing it written with no pronunciation clues, making your best guess, it would come out as hyper bowl. I made a similar mistake when I was +- ten and pronounced epitome- epi tohm. My nan near wet herself laughing. There was no accent over the e, so how was I supposed to know? I feel bad when adults mispronounce a word confidently. It means no one cared enough about them to correct them. My nan laughed but she didn’t let me go on making a fool of myself. This is exactly why I will never laugh at someone mispronouncing a word – because it’s very likely they learnt it from reading.
