All employees were members of said pool. I had to staff 3 lifeguards on any given shift. 75% of kids wouldn’t show up for their shifts. They either made some excuse or just didn’t show up at all. When I’d call them and tell them they were scheduled to work they’d say they were with their friends and could I call someone else in. Anywhere else this would be a fireable offense, not here. We had a few kids that were actual good kids with a good work ethic and they’d bank on the NC State Wolfpack 2024 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament March Madness Final Four Locker Room shirt In addition,I will do this OT which made the board unhappy. I couldn’t fire them, so I’d make cleaning the shitters their job for the next shift. They’d tell their parents who were friends with board members and be relieved of that duty. While it’s not summer related, I was talking to a ticket agent at southwest airlines and I made a comment about spring break and she told me kids go to places like Bali and Dubai now. Sort of makes my time at Daytona Beach seem a little lackluster. My parents were millionaires (maybe multimillionaires, depending on the timing) when I was in high school. My dad told me to get a job, so I started gigging with a band. I earned as much as any of my friends working at grocery stores, some of which also had millionaire or multimillionaire parents. I definitely did not need to work, so I wasn’t too worried about it. Most of the rich kids didn’t have summer jobs at my high school. Instead they went to expensive summer camps or travelled abroad. Anything from sports camps with former pro athletes (and not the cheaper tier of those, the really expensive ones) to prestigious math camps. Whatever floated their boat, their parents found them an expensive camp to go to.
