Most parents follow what their parents did and never examine what they are doing. And I cleaned my plate because wasting food stressed me out. I ended up obese. I didn’t want my kids to have an unhealthy relationship with food. Now my daughter is adopted and already came to us with her share of issues due to growing up with food insecurity and having sensory issues due to ASD/ADHD. Eating 3 large meals isn’t even suggested by most nutritionists. So I don’t make her clean her plate. I know she will if she’s hungry enough. Also I let her eat what she wants (within reason). If she doesn’t like what I cooked, I keep sandwich stuff and easy Mac that she can fix herself.

Due to her early life a lot of our struggles around food are due to her trying to control things around her. Instead of fighting it, we work on healing those wounds so she can be healthy, not so she can eat some amount of food that she didn’t even select.
