In reality the struggle has always been conservative versus liberal, party names be damned. The change really occurred in the 90’s when Republicans, foremost among them Newt Gingrich, with ample help from Rush Limbaugh decided to say the other faction was trying to destroy the country. It was a scorched earth policy that hasn’t slowed down and in fact has only had the accelerator pushed on harder. Most people could care less about the parties. You’re confusing “party” and “ideology” Yes, the struggle has been, is, and likely always will be conservative vs liberal here and in many other countries. The difference being in most countries there are many viable parties which must reach a consensus and form a coalition government. The extreme views on both sides are marginalized and separated by party names. In a two party system each side becomes defined in the mind of the other side as the most extreme views held by the opposing side. You can be a Socialist Democrat or you can be a Fascist Republican. There really is no other side to choose. Neither side recognizes “moderates” as anything but “traitors”. Here in the US, the GOP and the Dems were tired of “third party” usurpers and moved to restrict them. In 1987 the parties announced the creation of the Commission on Presidential Debates.

Restrictions don’t make the United States fall into a two party system. Our method of election does. We don’t have proportional representation like most parliamentary systems… so we tend to fall into two major parties. For instance, in Minnesota they’re not actually Democrats but members of the DFL… that party gained prominence and is now essentially aligned with the national Democratic Party.
