Years ago, I interviewed for a great position. It was a two person interview. I was not told which person would be my manager. Yeah don’t sweat it, I had an interview go sideways once because the guy told me something I put on my resumé was impossible to do. So after about 10 minutes of wasted time talking about said issue I just said “ Hey man just cause you can’t do it doesn’t mean I can’t “…didn’t get hired but didn’t want it after that anyway. You would’ve probably been interacting a lot with that manager. You would’ve probably ended up leaving out of anger.

I’ve had the same position with different bosses and it turned from a great experience to a miserable one. Who you work for can make all the difference in the world that no $ can make it worthwhile. If there are personality conflicts before your foot is even in the door, then you dodged a bullet. I would rather work a less-than-perfect job for someone who’s reasonable and supportive and doesn’t add undue stress to my life than a perfect job for an asshole who makes my life a living hell. You didn’t provide your industry, age or your experience, or how this job would have advanced your career, so it’s really hard to judge what you materially might have given up by turning down this job, but you can always invest in your career even with a less-than-perfect job. If you’re limiting yourself to exactly only what you currently do, that’s something to regret if you have aspirations for more. Again, without knowing what you do and where you want to take your career, it’s hard to provide specific advice, but additional education or getting more industry certifications is one way to do it. You can look for ways to expand what you do in your current role/job. Like, get your regular work done, but put your extra effort into things that will help you take that next step, and talk to management about where you want to take your career and things they can do to help you make that step. Turning down this job offer isn’t the end of your career growth. Be savvy and selfish with your work time, keep your resume out there, it will happen.
