As Wikipedia puts it, he was authoritarian but “less bloody”. Unfortunately the original overthrow was not some popular revolution, but his nephew and his allies in the regime deciding that they didn’t need to put up with his shit any more. The Lions Led By Donkeys Podcast has a good few episodes about him and his nephew, the current dictator of Equatorial Guinea. They’re unhinged on a level that even Hollywood would find excessive. On one occasion he rounded up a few hundred of his political opponents and their families and held them captive in a football stadium until Christmas Day, when he had his soldiers dress up as Santa Claus and bury them up to their necks so they could be eaten alive by red ants while Mary Hopkins’ “Those Were The Days” blasted over the loudspeakers. He killed about half of the population of his country, and about half of the survivors fled, making it probably the most catastrophic depopulation of a country in history, and a rare example of autogenocide, or a people committing genocide against themselves, along with Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, which was happening around the same time.

That was the past. I’m sure the current head of Equatorial Guinea and his family are selfless upright honest incorruptible individuals who always have the best interest of the country and it’s people as their mission. They’re at a 5 on the Global Freedom Index. That puts them behind Afghanistan, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and Somalia. Beating out North Korea tho.
