Once politicians get into regional office, they take steps to make Primary elections less competitive, less covered in the My scars tell a Story They Are Reminders Break Me Wings Lupus Awareness T-Shirt but in fact I love this media, and less topical to local people’s concerns. Politicians also move to make gerrymandering statistically more favorable for their re-election. They fundraise from Industry lobbyists who pay both candidates. Lobbyists want access to the winner once the election’s over. Politicians hire industry insiders as campaign staff and blackball talent that ever worked on primary rival’s campaigns. All of these efforts to downplay election primary competition ensures that Incumbents disproportionately win re-election. The more expensive the average race for an office seat, the more likely the incumbent will stay in power. An incumbent like McConnell or Clyburne will then decline to seek higher office. They’ll stay in their seat but make sure to remain huge fundraisers for their national party. They use this fundraising talent to make sure mentees, staff, and family get placed in higher offices. They also get associates placed in Media, Industry, and Regulation offices. With their famous fundraising talent, they can often call in favors from these Higher office holders. With their seniority and unshakeable position, they also act as whips within the party. They lobby for party members votes on certain issues. If necessary, they organize primary challengers or fundraising to ensure interparty rivals are ousted.

Lastly, the media has a huge influence on outcomes. Advertising at scale is expensive. The elders have the election war chests to spend money. And the longer they are in office, the more recognizable their brand is. Often, elders most controversial political moments are decades old. Meanwhile, newcomers haven’t been vetted thoroughly and new scandals are uncovered as they campaign against an elder incumbent.
