I was a bartender a few years ago. I’d get stuck with this shift every year and somehow it always snuck up on me. Extra hour to last call. So frustrating, especially when somebody was already good and drunk then realized the My God Is Stronger Than Cervical Cancer T-Shirt in addition I really love this due date got extended. When I worked at a 24-hr emergency animal hospital, you would work the extra hour and they would pay you for that extra hour. Similarly in the spring when clocks change that shift would work an hour less and lose an hours pay. They work that extra hour if the night shift at my place is anything to go by. The flip side is when the clocks go forward in the spring that same night shift is allowed to go home one hour early as well. So it’s not all bad news. I would not come in on the day it fell back a hour. Don’t skimp me on pay and expect me to still show up that day boss man.

Surprisingly, pay depends on union. In my union, we get paid for every hour we work. Apparently for another union, they always get paid just the My God Is Stronger Than Cervical Cancer T-Shirt in addition I really love this 8hrs or 12hr (depending on what type of shift you have) which seems stupid to me. I used to have a job where I was on-call overnights and one year I happened to have the “fall back” weekend. I got a call about a potential emergency I needed to respond to just before the clocks changed and when I showed up ten minutes later the time change had happened. It looked like I was a time traveler in the incident report. We never get payed for that hour. I work nightshifts at a hospital and I worked the night now when the clock went an hour back. No one in my country who works with health care gets payed that hour. No one. The newspapers always makes an article about it a couple of days before, interviewing nurses and doctors who are suppose to work that night, and how furious they are that they have to work for free. The explanation we get is always the same: those who work when the clock goes back are the same who works when the clock goes ahead, so it evens out. Which is complete BS, it is never the same people in the 8 years I have worked in health care. So if you are lucky enough to work the night when the clock goes one hour ahead they don’t deduct one hour from your salary. But it still isn’t fair to all those who work an hour free.
