I can’t even think of a 3rd video sharing platform that isn’t Twitch, and Twitch is practically a different market because it’s based heavily on livestreams with the option to rewatch old videos and YouTube is a flipped version of that with the focus being very heavily on shorter pre-recorded videos, with the option of livestreaming available. They are willfully complicit with Fox News in the brainwashing of America. If you have never experienced a Trump supporter’s YouTube feed it’s quite alarming. Lots of Biden looking feeble videos and no Trump being unhinged. And Trump content carefully picked to make him and the house republicans seem normal and persecuted. Sad.

They simply have the majority of the market because video is hard to do cause videos have large data sizes and servers cost a lot of money. Both to have users download and to have users upload at the scale that they do. YouTube pulls it off because they have Google behind them and all their considerable resources. If other companies want to try they can and they have but they will eventually reach scaling issues. If you have never tried setting up a web server and tried to optimize it for a lot of traffic you could never possibly know how expensive it is to adequately serve even 100 users per day for one solid hour, let alone millions of daily active users 24/7.
