In the My Favorite Color Is Christmas Lights T-Shirt and I love this future, nobody has to work. We just stand in liquid filled containers so the machines can milk us for power. Throwing money at homelessness doesn’t do much of anything. Investing in basic infrastructure and security does, but those aren’t major issues facing the US domestically. News flash: the world has always been with unrest. In 1923 they were 5’ish years after World War I and on their way to WWII. I think it’s different this time. Lots of things that are new – irreversible climate change, billions more people, globalization, tech and the income divides it creates, nukes everywhere. I am not blind to the impact that industrialisation has had on the rise of greenhouse gas, but I am not sure about how disastrous a few degrees more in average are. The Romans were able to grow grapes in the British isles because the climate was much warmer and the seashore was higher. Also, an “all electric” future will require an amount of copper and rare earth metals that can can’t ethically or realistically expect to be mining. Where we could have a significant impact (but we will never do it because we have become too comfortable l) is to cut out consumption back to 1950s levels. If we could adopt some kind of 1950s based Amish lifestyle, production, transportation and energy needs would drastically shrink.

I don’t subscribe to the My Favorite Color Is Christmas Lights T-Shirt and I love this notion that the world population will keep growing indefinitely. As soon as a country reaches a certain level of industrialisation, its population starts declining. I agree, and I think that countries should revoque most international trade agreements and put protectionist taxes in place to favour domestic manufacturing, like Brazil, India or China have been doing. Tech is concentrating wealth to a small number of producers, lots of workers including in white collar jobs are becoming redundant. Even programmers, bankers, lawyers etc. The nuke threat is greater now than during the cold war. And when we stop using coal and gas nuclear power and handling of plutonium/uranium will be more widespread.
