The Americans then went ahead and developed an aircraft designed to blow this new fighter out of the water. Years later, a MiG-25 pilot defects and the Americans can take a look at the MiG-25, turns out it’s a big heavy Interceptor aircraft with terrible maneuverability. And what did we get out it? One of the greatest fighters ever created, with zero air to air combat losses. 104 air to air kills, and 0 losses. And then we went ahead and made an even better air superiority fighter, the F22, because we got scared of the Su-27 and MiG-29.

One of my favorite stories. Truth was that it was a trash plane that just coincidentally ended up looking the same because the Soviet designers had some to similar conclusions for different reasons. It wasn’t a “trash plane”, it was expected by the west to be multi-purpose, but turned out to be highly specialised for a specific role. That specific role was to cover a long distance inside the USSR very quickly, carry long-range missiles to intercept heavy bombers, and have a powerful radar. It did all those things adequately for the cost, and it wasn’t supposed to fill the other purposes it eventually got used for by export customers.
