The Mothman legend emerged in the small town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, in the late 1960s. On November 15, 1966, five young grave diggers claimed to have encountered a humanoid creature with glowing red eyes and large, bird-like wings. The creature’s appearance sparked a wave of panic and speculation, and numerous sightings were reported in the following months. Some witnesses described the creature as resembling a large moth or a humanoid owl, while others claimed it possessed supernatural powers.

The Mothman legend became inextricably linked to the tragic collapse of the Silver Bridge on December 15, 1967. The bridge, which connected Point Pleasant to Ohio, collapsed during rush hour, killing 46 people. In the days leading up to the disaster, several witnesses reported seeing the Mothman creature near the bridge. Some claimed the creature had attempted to warn them of the impending collapse, while others believed it was responsible for the tragedy.
