Same reason most trees don’t have a bunch of seedlings under them: only like 1 in 100 million seeds become trees. The seeds has to fall at the right time, end up in the correct depth of soil at the appropriate moisture and temperature level, not get eaten by an animal, and germinate before the seed rots. If it’s too much sunlight, the leaves get burned and it dies. If it’s too much shade, the leaves don’t get food and it dies. Agreed. We have 2 cherry trees. Most of the cherry seeds are just left sitting on top of the mulch around the tree and thus don’t grow, but we do get 5-10 little tree growths every year. Either we pull them or they die off from competition, but every year some of the cherry seeds do become cherry trees. For me…it seems the birds get to the tree before I get a chance …2 yrs ago both cherry trees were full….waited til a few turned the color I wanted…was gonna go grab the ones I had been eyeing with my morning coffee….Went out to the yard both treed picked clean.
