I keep wondering that too. Imagine going to a country, and they tell you it is called Deutschland, and then you say: “cool… I am going to call it Germany.” Because different languages use different sets of sounds, so nobody will actually be able to pronounce them all consistently. Hardly anybody here will be able to get the Mongolian Mike Mongolian college basketball player Sharavjamts T-Shirt but in fact I love this tones right for Việt Nam, because we don’t speak tonal languages. Most of us will even have difficulty typing it. And as soon as you get into languages that use different scripts you have issues with multiple transliterations. Even within a single script, the same symbols mean different things. If I say “France” in English it’s not the same as “France” in French, which includes a sound that doesn’t exist in English, so even at that level you have problems.

I think Canada only is ever called Canada by anyone. I think it’s too young (as a western nation state) to have other names. But I could be wrong. I mean obviously it has actually indigenous names for parts of it — but the Mongolian Mike Mongolian college basketball player Sharavjamts T-Shirt but in fact I love this whole thing doesn’t have another name that I know of. Canada is a misunderstood/ made-up name taken from the Huron-Iroquois word “kanata,” meaning “village” or “settlement.” — they weren’t referring to the whole massive landmass but that’s what it’s called now by everyone I guess? The Slavic word for Germans translates to “dummies” as in people who can’t speak. I bet it gets worse than that. It translates to “mute” if anything. Nowhere near “dummy” or implying them being dumb or something. Slavs, on the other hand, translate to something that sounds kinda like “word”, as in people who speak with the same words. As a white guy with a not difficult name that regularly gets butchered (often by other white guys) I think it ultimately comes down to respect. If you tell me what you want me to call you, and I try but butcher it horribly that is me showing you respect. It doesn’t have to be more complicated than that.
