You also have to have friends whom you actually like which seems to be a major point of confusion for most of reddit. Missing the point. Everyone can do what they want and no one will bat an eye. It’s about making a simple ceremony—or not being married at all—more accepted as a norm. It’s about adjusting expectations. I’m not xtian by any means, but to me, the celebration (not the ceremony) was always for the family and/or friends – the people who were there for you for the steps of your life. There are many who would want to see you want to take one of the biggest steps, and in my mind, celebrating the choice of a life partner is not only one of the biggest ones, but also a big milestone in saying “goodbye”, since most of my friends at least, have grown more distant since getting married. Kinda like how at a certain point birthdays are just for making everyone else feel like they’re doing something nice for me rather than doing anything I actually want to do. Feels more like a chore than a celebration. The “celebration” should be for the couples that have actually made it. Why celebrate if you’re simply making a choice to be together? There should be more societal emphasis on celebrating the anniversaries rather than the beginning of the relationship. Just my two cents. Why did you write this whole thing as if forced weddings deserve to be celebrated, but consensual weddings don’t?

The mere existence of weddings doesn’t somehow prevent couples from celebrating reaching 30, 40, 50 years etc. But you can just do the courthouse wedding, then do the event as an “unofficial” wedding at a friend’s house or something as a nearly free event. You can celebrate it however you want. The expensive parts are the food, the labor costs for the people making and serving the food, and the labor costs of having people set up and clean up all the things like the tables, chairs, plates, and utensils. Things like the photographer cost a bit too, but much less. Yeah its mostly for them, its totally for them to celebrate, its all for them, not me, its for everyone else, for them.
