No way someone would actually regret leaving an authoritarian tankie country. Defecting constitutes a huge life change, and they might have a home, a family and friends they left back in the north, in these circumstances, 80% is huge. Makes sense, the Culture shock and knowing your family will me sent to a gulag will weigh on a persons conscious I moved from California to Florida in 2016 and I still deeply regret it, technically I’m still in the same country but emotionally??? Kinda like a ex convict not being able to go to the real world. They’re brainwashed and confirmed. It’s probably overwhelming as fuck.

My parents would told me “you better be obedient to your boss” where what I needed is to be productive and collaborative, and it is sometimes necessary to disagree with my boss. In terms of discrimination, it does not bother me as much since I can still find opportunities. But I can see how it impacts some people more.
