I’m in Canada, maybe that changes things. I expect practically nothing from 4 month interns. Anything they can do is a bonus. Some fresh eyes and perspective. But by the Minions Horror able Me Halloween Shirt also I will do this time they finish up here they’re part of the family. They’ve probably even done a bit of overtime, broken something, had actual code shipped, and learned enough ropes to get a real job. And yes, we’ve hired quite a few of them. It’s an amazing way to see them in action without long term commitments. I have never heard any hint of them getting fired. I even joke sometimes that if they break something serious we’ll make them write documentation till their contracts end. Wow I was just wondering how something like that happens this morning then see your post now. That’s crazy to me, never knew it was even “possible.” I fucked up a lot at my first internship and had wildly unprofessional moments but even they didn’t fire me. It’s not on you, it’s on them. Head up and keep grinding. I know it’s lame but on the bright side, you saved yourself from that toxicity early. For sure. Where I work, we usually have dozens of interns each summer, and I’ve personally worked with a ton of them. The vast majority of them were inexperienced, but willing to learn and otherwise a joy to work with. The ONLY one I’ve seen fired was a guy let go due to repeated harassing comments and behavior around women (he was warned by HR several times) along with a total lack of productivity due to having his nose in his cell phone when he wasn’t bothering the ladies.

Being slow and having less-than-great coding style is WHY they’re interns, for crying out loud. They’re still students. This isn’t your fault at all. 2 weeks isn’t enough time for anyone except seniors to get up to speed. Internships are one of two things: a way for bigger companies to scout/secure talent for their junior positions, or a way to get someone to do some “bitch work” while they get to learn what it’s like to be a SWE. It sounds like they didn’t want either and wanted someone who would be productive from the get-go with little to no mentorship(aka they wanted a senior and instead hired an intern lol).
