I’m surprised by so many people saying Wanda is purely evil and irredeemable. Life is just so much more complex than good vs evil. Clint lost his entire family in the snap all at once and eventually got them back. A huge difference with Wanda is the degree and succession of each loss. She grew up in what was clearly a war torn and socioeconomically challenged society. In the midst of that early adversity, she lost her parents. Years later she lost her brother – her one remaining family member and meaningful human (or perhaps humanoid is more appropriate) connection. She then meets and sacrifices the love of her life for the benefit of the universe only to subconsciously bring him back into semi-existence and sacrifice him again for the sake of other’s wellbeing. While they were a creation of her subconscious mind and power, she then had to sacrifice her children, the two beings who not only reconstituted her familial connection, but also forge that sense of responsibility and devotion that comes along when another life is reliant on you for its well-being, safety and sense of comfort and love. I wouldn’t say her losses are necessarily the greatest of all MCU or comic characters, but when you take the repetitive nature of her loss into account, it helps put a lot in perspective. She has a long succession of loses over a significant amount of time. Not only that, but each loss is followed by a new period of hope in the new connections she forms only to have those new hopes ripped away from her time and time again. There’s something about on going cycles of loss and hope of this variety that are incredibly tragic and traumatic, undoubtedly reeking havoc on one’s psyche. In this sense, I feel she has experienced a more impactful degree of loss than several other characters. Experiencing large singular periods of loss or having loss after long periods of joy (I.e. Thor) are just very different in regards to their impact. Wanda started life with adversity only to have it creep back in time and time again with each loss of hope. I truly believe the events of wandavision were largely due to subconscious desires and denial, not selfishness and lack of consideration for others. Taking the complexity of mental health, trauma and the numerous tragedies she has experienced along with the manipulative and destructive nature of the dark hold, I think it is easier to digest the concept that a lot of what is likely going to happen in doctor strange 2 is out of her control and largely due to brainwashing on evil mystical steroids. That’s not to say that she won’t need to be held accountable for these actions and atone in the future, but rather that it’s just incredibly more complex than what is being credited by many. Also, I can’t blame her for giving into the desire to read the dark hold. With so much loss in her life, the mysterious nature of her powers and a new powerful entity claiming you are the scarlet witch and the only way feasible to learn more about yourself, your existence, your power and your future is to read this dangerous book – it’s hard to not see the temptation and ease of taking a look when access is so readily available, even for someone with the purest of intentions.
