Overfeed children and guests to show their love (and subconsciously ensure they are not starving), then wonder why on earth they get sick or overweight. Also if the parents have worked hard to get money and then their child doesn’t inhale the food, it can feel like a slap to the face for them and they overreact. “BE THANKFUL FOR THE FOOD EAT IT ALL.”

We often expect more of children than we do of ourselves or other adults. We expect children to regulate their emotions and punish them when they do not, even though many adults barely regulate their own emotions. We send them to school all day, then expect them to do homework when they get home without complaint even though most of us would balk if our employers sent us home with work every night. We expect them to sit quietly and still for long stretches of time, when kids are hardwired to be wiggly and active. We make them eat when they aren’t hungry, apologize when they’re not sorry, and be polite when they are upset.
