I’d also consider demanding backpay for the Mickey Through The Years shirt But I will love this work if you do agree. All of it in writing, of course. Everyone else here hit the nail on the head with their advice. Personally, I’ve gotten the “we like you where you are treatment” in the past (with that wording). They don’t care about you at all, even if you’re making them money. Just remember that. They’ll forget about you one day. Don’t let them take advantage of you today. You’re fucked if you agree to those terms. The ONLY way to protect yourself is to say, “If I am immediately taking on this responsibility and culpability of my team’s performance, I will be paid accordingly at the get go. Would you hire someone off the street and tell them that we’re going to pay you a janitor’s wage until “you’re comfortable” being a director? Of course you wouldn’t” If you accept these parameters that they are “offering”, you are only seting yourself up to be a sucker…and they KNOW it!

They don’t hire people off the Mickey Through The Years shirt But I will love this street and pay them a grade level less to “see what they can do” first. They pay them some sort of market rate for the position. They need to do the same for internal promotions too. In addition to getting the terms in writing get a time frame for the title change and pay rise as well. And make it a reasonable time frame. A month, maybe 2. I had something similar happen several bosses ago. My bosses boss wanted to promote me and my boss said that I wasn’t ready. She told me that she wanted to see how I ran the department (which I was basically already doing anyway). After 6 months I went back to her and asked how I was doing and if she had any complaints. She said great, she was very pleased with how I had been handling things. I then asked her about the promotion and I’ll never forget the smirk on her face when she said, “Well X isn’t my boss anymore.” So no, no promotion, no pay rise but definitely a lesson learned. And yes, as others have suggested update your resume with your eventually gonna get it title and experience (I’d start shopping it, just in case).
