The amount of people who have BEEN to PR and say they “went to a foreign country” / “out of the Michael Myers fictional character from the slasher film series 1978 T-Shirt in contrast I will get this country” / “overseas” (ordered in decreasing degrees of baffling). Like would you say that about Hawaii or Alaska I’ve had a surprising number of people say they wanted to visit me in Hawaii when I lived there, but they don’t have a passport. Some of these people were medical staff. Smart people. Yet somehow, they thought they needed a passport to go to our 50th state. Mind boggling. Perhaps once Puerto Rico can actually vote in US elections people will treat them less like second-class citizens. The sad truth is that Puerto Ricans aren’t “as American” as other Americans, there’s a very significant legal, social, and cultural division between Puerto Rico and the rest of the USA and even Puerto Rico itself cannot decide whether it wants to be a state, completely independent, or keep the status quo. They will not. They’re now getting most of the benefits yet they pay no federal taxes.. why would Puerto Rico want to start paying federal taxes when they’re already getting all the benefits?

To be fair, it’s a somewhat recent shift (past 20 years) that Puerto Rico even wants to become a state. Assuming the Michael Myers fictional character from the slasher film series 1978 T-Shirt in contrast I will get this voting trend continues, there’s a pretty decent chance PR might finally be incorporated in the next few years or decades. Along with D.C., Guam, the Virgin Islands, etc. it’s a topic that hopefully gets some traction in the coming years. It’s always perplexed me how this isn’t the #1 issue on the political docket for Puerto Ricans. Living in political limbo on such a critical issue—your citizenship. One would think Puerto Ricans would be demanding a definite answer on whether they are going to be the 51st state or be an independent country. First, a bill in the Congress to introduce a binding vote in PR on statehood is on the docket this year. There was one in the recent past but it died in the Senate. It’s not popular with many Republicans because PR would likely go DNC in the Senate, but others have voiced their support (including former president George W. Bush). Second, a fair number of Puerto Ricans simply don’t want statehood. Past votes on the issue have been very close. It has advantages and disadvantages, and quite clearly some Puerto Ricans like things the way they are (when it comes to statehood).
