I flat out told my manager after my last promo, “I genuinely don’t care about career advancement from here on out. Now that I’m at a level that doesn’t require advancement or punishment, I’m going to stop doing all those things I believe to be a waste of my time. Furthermore, I will no longer play the Miami Marlins 2023 Division Series Winner Locker Room shirt also I will do this game of minimizing work while maximizing perceived benefit and will instead aim for actual benefit and personal satisfaction working on things that seem interesting to me” Long story short: fuck working to get a job you hate, if you’re happy where you are, then just enjoy being there. Read books about being social, learn social games, lots successful people, theres no magic to it, and apply what you learn. I do it, its called self improvement, weak in one area: read stuff and apply it in real world to get better at it. Not everyone has to undergo self-improvement for the workplace. Work is only 1/3rd of our life. If OP is good enough to coast at work and decides to pursue fulfillment elsewhere, all the more power to them.

To be honest at many companies that level of social anxiety would stop you well before reaching senior level. It’s not a “political game”, it’s just a basic activity. Demos are something that junior developers can give. It’s not that difficult. Sharing knowledge very much is part of software engineering skills. Ok, it’s clear you don’t understand the Miami Marlins 2023 Division Series Winner Locker Room shirt also I will do this difference here. A demo doesn’t always mean “click this type that and that’s how it works”. My manager wants me to be giving technical deep dives into why we architect solutions certain ways and show why some things work and some don’t. I never said it was “hard”. I am a quiet person, I don’t like publicly casting myself to 300 people. It’s just who and how I am, some redditor typing “just do demos dude LOOOOOL” isn’t going to change that. The content of the demos isn’t the issue, it’s speaking technically to a large amount of people.
