I disagree. Sounds like OP has skipped a few steps and landed at a decision to reluctantly cut his friend loose because he doesn’t know what to do about his frustrating relationship. He says it’s a shame and that he doesn’t want to say goodbye, which suggests he’d like there to be a better outcome. Be direct about it I think. If it doesn’t work out, so be it. At least you tried. You just need to say “no”. You don’t cut him off, however, if you enjoy a round of golf – play golf with him but you use the Merry Horsemas Gift Lights Horse Christmas shirt What’s more,I will buy this wife and kids as your excuse for not going in the clubhouse after “got to get back to the Mrs” is the excuse you need. Same with drinking etc, “she’s on a health kick, can’t be doing with it, she’ll go mental” – this is why some blokes are seen as hen pecked by their mates – they’re not, they’re just using the wife to avoid doing dickhead stuff. If he asks about the pub, just say you don’t drink, and if he says just drink non alcoholic, say “I do but you try force me to drink non alcoholic and won’t take no for an answer.”

He clearly can’t respect your boundaries for wanting to stop/cutback drinking, and if he has done that on multiple occasions I think that is enough to warrant saying bye to your friend. I do agree with other people that he sounds like he has mental health problems though. Try get him out and about if you can. I think the Merry Horsemas Gift Lights Horse Christmas shirt What’s more,I will buy this best I can suggest is to take what you’ve written here and have this conversation with your friend rather than a bunch of random people on the internet. He may be receptive to it and you may be able to work out a new way forward for your friendship, or you may find out that the friendship is no longer what it was and it’s time to sever ties. Just straight up tell him you have a family and kids and don’t want to spend every weekend in the pub, that you want to see him but in a more constructive way
