This may have been how many breeds got started, but nearly all popular breeds now have grown to the point where dog breeders need not reinforce characteristics through incest. That is only something you would do if you were too cheap to pay for outside fertilization (which could be quite expensive if youre breeding to show standard). In fact incestual breeding if anything will produce a higher number of puppies which are not up to standard, and are not trainable which show dogs must be, thanks to many of the defects caused by that kind of breeding.
