I do, if you hold the button in there is a tiny possibility that the handbrake lowers ever so slightly just as you release the button, stopping the ratchet from fully engaging, meaning the tension on the cable will be pulling on just the tip of the tooth, as the cable cools and shortened maybe increasing tension slightly it could cause the tooth to fail, probably just dropping to the next tooth but enough for the car to till down the road and kill a load of kids. You are going to stretch you handbrake cable doing that. Next time you apply your handbrake, don’t press the button and count the clicks, on most cars you should only get about three. Much more then that and the cable is stretched and needs adjusting. The best people engage the button to stop the clicking noise up until it’s 2 clicks off the highest position. Then release the button for the top 2 clicks so you can be sure it’s properly engaged. Only the best people do this.

It’s an annoying sound. And I don’t worry about how much its applied, just pull handbrake as far as it goes (within reason) i’d rather it be extra stopped, than not stopped enough.

They are instructed to pull, hard, and to let it lock as the purpose is to stop the car as quickly as feasible. In the UK with your “hand brake” I think you can use it any way that you like.
