If they are playing that game – they at LEAST can put a plan in writing with a schedule and milestones/objectives for you to hit which will equate to title and raise. if they can’t/won’t, then you’re just keeping the chair warm for one of the execs to find a friend to put in your chair. Nope the fuck out of that one. No pay, no extra work. If you do the job to ‘see how you do’ you will never see the money. Tell them they just let a high level person go so you know they have the money. Get the pay raise and if you don’t work out in the new role they can discuss moving you back to your old position at your old pay rate. Tell them no, you don’t work for free. They can advertise the job and select the best candidate. If the money’s good, maybe you’ll apply.

I personally would not do it, ever. My pay is commensurate to the Marina Shafir Problema shirt but in fact I love this job being performed.
