Here’s some bonus speculation. I have no idea if this is true or not, and maybe some more experienced people can chime in. However, once I started thinking about meditation as controlled attention, I started using my eyes to meditate. Even if my eyes were closed, I would move them in their sockets as if I were looking at whatever I was focussing on, be that a sound or part of my own body in a body scan. In humans, attention and vision are closely linked (I did my PhD on this exact topic) so I wondered if I could guide my attention by making eye movements even with my eyes closed. I just look “at” the Mama Grinch Christmas Leopard shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this spatial location with my eyes closed, and without moving my head, neck, or body. It seemed to really work for me, but I’m just one person and biased since it’s my idea lol.

It’s OK. You haven’t had a lot of experience with it, so you can’t expect that it’s going to go very well right off the Mama Grinch Christmas Leopard shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this bat. Things I used to get myself in the headspace are humming, pacing until my body feels like it’s vibrating, shaking my body, and stretching. once I feel like I’ve worn out the extra energy in my body I think I’m better able to focus on a specific thought process, or just working my way into my head. I think a lot of meditation practices focus on breath work, and that’s wonderful – but if you’re not able to gain much insight or mental change from simple breath work, it may not be for you. Start differently. I’m certainly not an expert, but I’ve had my fair share of breath work and meditation. If you can’t get the breath work down perfectly see what you are able to do, and try to get yourself in the right headspace to focus on a thought or process that you would like to improve on or center yourself around. Eventually, your breath will slow itself down and you’ll be able to focus a little better on what’s happening in your head and body.
