…teachers REFUSED to teach in-person during the Make Pittsburgh Pirates Grateful again shirt Besides,I will do this pandemic even though it was required per their contracts – wondering if their selfishness had an effect??? Yes the teachers are supposed to get sick and potentially alter their lifelong health/die otherwise they’re selfish. Yup, that makes a lot of sense and is totally sane. It’s all their fault, definitely not the fault of our government, lack of funding, low pay and politicians using schools and education as a political tool to secure voter donations. I think teachers here have made it quite clear what needs to change. And stop trying to put it all on teachers. yet again. I’m not an admin, just a parent and someone interested in literacy. Not sure how you’re reading my post as putting it on teachers? The title looks like it was written by an admin who wants to blame teachers, and/or place the solution of wide societal issues on teachers. I’m sorry if it came across that way. “We” was meant to represent “We as a society”, and not “You as teachers”. As someone who has been working in secondary for a few years, it really has to be a whole community effort. The class sizes, lack of SpEd and language support, and pushing us to fundamentally change our teaching to new trends (right now, Kagan is all the rage), is preventing teachers from creating a realistic and stable curriculum to build off of in ways that will help more individual students. The trust between the community and teachers also needs to be rebuilt, especially in red states (like mine), where any teacher that challenges these more corporate ideologies is accused of horrendous ideals. One of my colleagues wore her teaching badge to vote for a bill that would help provide more staff for our students who need dramatically more support, and was accused of being a p×do by someone else in the voting line. We are schools, not businesses. We cannot be run like businesses.
Make Pittsburgh Pirates Grateful again shirt: best style for you
Let the Make Pittsburgh Pirates Grateful again shirt Besides,I will do this whole system fail and give itself a hard reset. Teachers need to stop worrying about these inadequate admin, kids with chronic behavior issues, work overload. Only work your contracted hours. Education has become toxic with parents failing their children and teaching their kids to undermine authority and all these inadequate admin just want to please them so they don’t ruffle feathers or are scared to say no to anything. Kids aren’t up to their grade level academically, teachers need to stop worrying that they aren’t. It’ll either break the system and chaos will start when it’s their time to be adults or it’ll reset itself. Every year some administrator thinks they have the solution for more student engagement, yet they always fall short because they too do not have the capacity to keep up whatever program they “designed.” Btw, I’m in education, not on the teaching side, but on the info systems side. The toxic environment does not only permeate the classroom. It is the same on the board level. Employees always complaining, yet they still stay?
I’m going to go out on a limb here and say get rid of fluorescent lights. I’ve read stuff about their effect on kids and a connection to autism and even if it seems a little off the Make Pittsburgh Pirates Grateful again shirt Besides,I will do this wall, I say run with it. They say places with more natural light have lower rates of autism, and that the longer you can keep kids away from that type of lighting, the better it is for kids. Apparently babies are especially sensitive to the subtle flickering of the lights that are barely perceptible to adults. Seems like a small thing that could be very helpful. Follow up question: Is there a helpful role that technology can play in this? If so, how? (Aside from discouraging personal device use in class) Have nationwide NAEYC standards year round preschool for 3-5 year olds, with required parenting classes in early literacy and math lessons along with emotional regulation skills

About Make Pittsburgh Pirates Grateful again shirt
I was reading in other countries kids have the Make Pittsburgh Pirates Grateful again shirt Besides,I will do this same teacher for several years in a row… instead of starting over new every year. Money. Pure and simple. You want better schools, teachers who care more about their work (and aren’t stretched too thin holding down 2 other gigs), and better communities? PAY US. I’ve been looking at job postings lately. $30/hr offered for teachers (masters preferred) for my in-demand area (STEM) in San Francisco!!! WTF. Are you kidding me? Who’s living on that in Iowa, let alone CA? Collectively, we are not pissed off enough about this. Sick of it. Love teaching, but the pay is absolutely demoralizing. Rant over. For us, we’re seeing a drop off in kids where they have 3rd Grade Math level and a 4th Grade Reading level. I think we need to have targeted interventions at the Elementary level and then more communication between schools. Teaching junior high for a long time there was zero communication or data from the lower levels. We started at guessing even with diagnostics and had no clue what was being done. Then moving to high school I saw there was even less communication from the junior high. The thing is we pay teachers on special assignment to be coaches for both K-5 and then 6-12. There is zero reason those teachers shouldn’t be guiding the instruction, showing where the gaps are and what the trends are to help bridge some of that. Instead everyone is reinventing the wheel at every transitional grade and it hasn’t worked in 20 years since I’ve been there. When you bring it up? It’s always “It’s a good idea, we’ll have to pass that along.”
Stop teaching what the Make Pittsburgh Pirates Grateful again shirt Besides,I will do this school wants you to teach bc it cripples kids learning, teach what they need regardless of whether or not you get fired, that’s the only way to stop indoctrination and enslavement of feeble minds I’ve stayed in education for 5 years asking this same question. I see nobody is doing anything and I’m constantly the bad guy for having (well-stated) expectations, so I’m taking some time away, and I’m thrilled. How much of it is generational? Both of my high school zoomer cousins born to gen X helicopter parents are D students in high school. My sister in law teaches high school and is burnt out. These were parents who were adults when the internet went mainstream, and it is their kids who are zonked out on TikToks. My point is… will it just better as the pendulum swings back to the Boomer / Millennial/ Alpha generation and away from the Gen X / Zoomers?
more efficient distribution of resources in a school system and not reinventing the Make Pittsburgh Pirates Grateful again shirt Besides,I will do this wheel because someone wrote a book and is doing speaking tours. Just a brief comment, as someone who gave birth relatively recently in WA. I was given an absolute tonne of handouts on the importance of reading at least 5 books a day to my child from birth. I was even given a hardcover book called baby ways (classic lol). Then every child health nurse visit this message was reiterated, with more handouts too. Now do I remember to read 5 books everyday? No – but it is in my mind, I do try. Rhyme time at the local library was really good too as it was at least a bit social. I’ve homeschooled from the start. When I had her tested, she was several grade levels ahead. Homeschool is obviously a privilege and not something everyone can or should do, but I find it “funny” how the general public will still think it is the lesser option.
The biggest problem is lack of discipline. If there are disruptions in class, no one is learning and it takes several minutes for students to get beyond the Make Pittsburgh Pirates Grateful again shirt Besides,I will do this disruption and ready to learn again. Administrators think they are academic leaders and they are not. They are there to make sure the school and classes run smoothly and that is primarily handling disciplinary problems. Every teacher went to school to learn how to teach the subjects they are teaching and do not need administrators telling them how to teach. They need administrators to handle disruptive student situations so teachers can teach and students can learn, but they either don’t know how, don’t want to be bothered, are worried about the school’s discipline numbers, or all of the above. Small issues can and should be handled by the teacher, but anytime a student is interfering with the teacher’s ability to teach or other students’ ability to learn, that student needs to be removed or learning is not taking place. Once students know the admin is going to hold them accountable, regardless of what the numbers look like, behavior will improve. Kids are going to push the limits until the limits are enforced. The excuse of “well, if we remove the disruptive students they aren’t learning” Is BS. The truth is; If you don’t remove them, no one is learning, and the disruptive students aren’t learning anyway.
We’ve known for over 20 years what was needed to “fix” literacy, but special interests clung tight to balanced literacy and failed two decades worth of children for whom reading didn’t come naturally. Fortunately, the Make Pittsburgh Pirates Grateful again shirt Besides,I will do this “science of reading” push is taking hold. Parent education–or at least parental accountability. If the parent had to show up to weekend school and watch their kid refuse to work or phone it in, that might spur some change. However, that absolutely would result in criticism considering that some parents work weekends/may not have transportation/economically can’t take the day off. I don’t care–these parents need some sort of wake up. Teachers cannot solve poverty and bad parenting.
The media and news needs to know about the Make Pittsburgh Pirates Grateful again shirt Besides,I will do this state of education. I’m not saying there’s a giant coordinated conspiracy but It feels like some how in the data collection process there’s something that allows for school not to report the data on a bunch of high risk students and violence in the classroom. Honestly, nothing short of fixing struggling communities will fix kids’ performance in their schools. And by “fixing,” I mean reversing socioeconomic harm brought by deindustrialisation and gutting a lot of social services back in the early 80s. You look at schools that are doing well and they’re almost universally in communities that are also doing well. Are there miracles happening in this or that particular school in a struggling neighborhood? Sure. But you won’t get improvement on a national scale without serious systemic change.
Honestly, get rid of not being able to have a student repeat a grade. These kids know that no matter how bad they do, they will still advance down the Make Pittsburgh Pirates Grateful again shirt Besides,I will do this track along with their friends. And then they will just attend a special computer class that allows them to catch up (read: use google to cheat and make it look like they did something) and magically they graduate. If they knew that failure meant they had to repeat a grade some to most would actually put in some effort, but right now lazy is rewarded, so why should they change? Is there a policy reason for why students are moved to the next grade even if they haven’t mastered the material? Honestly trying to understand why this is happening at all. Sure, students and parents will be upset and make a stink if the kid needs to repeat, but that can’t be the true reason why students here never repeat a grade. Could someone enlighten me for why the system is set up that way? I’m not sure why, but where I teach (well sub, but I have ran a classroom of my own while subbing) students only need to pass one semester out of 6 in middle school to get to high school, and if they fail Algebra I, they still get promoted to Geometry. So we end up with seniors with less than 5 credits sitting in a computer classroom (usually 30 to 50 per classroom with one teacher) doing computer work in order to earn their credits. Had a a student tell me that he just cheated with google and finished a semester of Algebra in a week.
These kids are only learning how to work a broken system, they are simply not ready for the Make Pittsburgh Pirates Grateful again shirt Besides,I will do this real world, and to be honest it scares me. Like a lot of people are saying, behavior is the number one issue. There have to be real consequences for bad behavior. So many schools and teachers give in and the worst punishment they get is not being allowed to go to a pizza party. It sucks to say but they really need to trim the bad behavior out of schools. Expulsions and transfers. Set up a high risk school or something to try to save them but they can’t keep the wild kids in with the average ones. Whenever I’m in a class and I see one or two meek, well behaved kids surrounded by 7-8 monsters (and 12 middle of the road or worse kids) it feels like child abuse.
We need to stop trying to get students out of the Make Pittsburgh Pirates Grateful again shirt Besides,I will do this water at the end of the river and start figuring out why they’re falling in midstream. Until that happens, we’ll continue to drive the nail through our hands; expecting the hole to be closed when the nail is removed. Stop allowing students and parents to be willfully ignorant. There are many evils with tracking, but at some point we might have to try a modified version of it in public schools. I believe that the school, student and parents should all have a voice in deciding what educational path the student is going to pursue. In my class (11th grade) the biggest issue is that too many students and their parents don’t give a fuck, so I end up being a babysitter. Students come to class with headphones in and think that it’s totally normal to spend the period watching videos on their phone. This shit happens in my AP class and my non-AP class. It’s beyond ridiculous. It might be helpful to figure out which students actually give a fuck about their education and which ones prefer to spend their school day watching Netflix or hanging around the bathroom.
Like I said earlier, I don’t want to cut students off from taking the Make Pittsburgh Pirates Grateful again shirt Besides,I will do this challenging academic path, but if they choose to take AP courses they need to adhere to certain expectations. Namely keep the fucking phone in your backpack and do the damned reading. Very few students will qualify for anything better… unless they have NA lineage, then they get in free with a full ride. Some states/schools are going to free tuition for students from home making under 75k or thereabouts… personally, I can’t wait to see what our universities look like when they are heavily populated by 18-20yos that have known since they started school that they were getting into college and won’t have to pay for it. I agree so much with the top 2 posts. But how do we get there? I say a massive, full-nation, 90+% walkout of teachers. Just a big old strike til everyone realizes our worth.
Stop falling victim to the Make Pittsburgh Pirates Grateful again shirt Besides,I will do this latest educational fad. They’re sales people. They get paid for selling the latest package, not test results. You’re working at cross purposes. They don’t care what your results are. They’re going to tell you it’s the Best Thing Ever whether it is or not. I watched my kids do arithmetic their school/teacher-approved method. Didn’t understand it. Showed them the way I was taught back in the ’70s. They agreed it was faster and shorter. Point: there is more than one path to the right answer. If a kid doesn’t get one, try another. Common Core is a problem? Dump it and try something else. CC is something I might use doing arithmetic in my head. It’s not useful to me on paper. Kids don’t understand borrowing for subtraction? Demonstrate using dimes and pennies. A column for each. The goal at the end of subtraction is to have 9 or fewer of each. Doesn’t have to be real. Poker chips would suffice – white pennies, blue dimes, red dollars. Numbers are abstract. Give them something to manipulate. This is how Waldorf education does multiplication. Kids have an innate understanding of the commutative law.
As teachers, we need to start telling ourselves that a lot of what we do is above our pay grade. We are too generous. We have the Make Pittsburgh Pirates Grateful again shirt Besides,I will do this mindset that we need to control things beyond our control. How about we go in, do our job, and go home? We are in danger of losing our latest batch of teachers due to burn out. They are the ones most at risk of extended needless adjunct hours. The majority of new testers under our wings are women in their 20’s! We need to set a better example for them. Administrators are behind the times. We need to adjust our mindsets and stop volunteering free labor. It’s related to the future people. Most of the kids see their only future as “influencers” and are very aware of the declining economic situation as well as climate despair. The most damning is the administrators and parents who turn a blind eye to the disfunction and blame teachers.
Let me help- it’s all related to oligarchy in the Make Pittsburgh Pirates Grateful again shirt Besides,I will do this US. All of this shit is a downstream effect of oligarchy- preventing action on climate change, printing money to siphon to the ultra-rich, undermining elections and constant life in a constitutional crisis. The only way forward involves getting rid of the NCLB carrots dangling still from the ESEA and returning a bunch of control to states and locals. Until that happens I cannot imagine anything will change. I also, unfortunately, don’t see how that happens with three Federal Education Department still in tact, but perhaps it could be reformed to do some good. I’ve seen parents give their kids iPads to “keep them occupied”. Those same kids are now addicted to their devices. As a parent, I have strict screen time rules. I prefer my kids read or entertain themselves without a ipad or similar device. Simple. The government needs to start up patriotic propaganda commercials laced with nostalgia that show families reading books to their little kids, older kids mowing their elderly neighbors lawns, and families praying around the dinner table. Problem solved.
Get rid of standardized testing and start giving children tools to use in their toolbox. The whole phrase “give a man a fish” is so important in regards to education of children. I think a lot of issues could be solved if students had a firm foundation which they should stand upon. Instead of admins forcing “this is the Make Pittsburgh Pirates Grateful again shirt Besides,I will do this answer to the test, memorize the list” to teach, it should be “this is information you should learn, refer to this information when the test comes”. I also feel like grinding fundamentals in lower grade levels AND re-visiting them in higher grade levels to reinforce those concepts is important. For example, maybe we should read less Shakespeare in high school English classes and start taking deep dives into the grammatical structure and syntax of the language. (I can hear every English teacher draw their sword. It’s fine! We can keep Macbeth, Hamlet, and Othello in the curriculum.. I’m just saying drop Romeo and Juliet. Four years of plays from The Bard is too much, TBH.
For context on what I mean by that specific example, I grew up homeschooled as the Make Pittsburgh Pirates Grateful again shirt Besides,I will do this child of an Asian immigrant–yes, the stereotype is real and is 10x worse when said parent is also your teacher–and she was HUGE on the idea of me learning grammar… because it’s what was taught to her as an adult as to what would help her be a natural English speaker. I was a 3rd grade equivalent learning about natural and transposed order, active and passive voice, present/past/past participle verbs, the difference between compound and complex sentences, being forced to take random sentences from novels and diagram them, understanding how to use prepositional phrases properly, the difference between direct and indirect objects, phonics textbooks (where I had to learn concepts like diphthongs), etc. I also had to do vocabulary builders and she would always buy reading comprehension textbooks (where I had to read stories and answer questions whose answers were only inferred from the stories, rather than outright stated).
