No one gets paid based on how important their job is. Volunteers at the Magic johnson an American businessman and former professional basketball player T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this soup kitchen are quite literally unpaid. You’re paid based on how much money you generate the company, adjusted based on how replaceable you are. An engineer at facebook easily generates millions of dollars per year for facebook. The hospital the doctor works at doesn’t have nearly as much money as facebook. It doesn’t service as many people. You’re not paid based on how much money you make the company, you’re paid based on how easy or hard it would be to replace you. And you can’t get mad at salaries falling when there is a massive flood of new people in the space partly brought on by CS’ own toxic superiority complex and circlejerking.

Well you have to be bringing in more money to the Magic johnson an American businessman and former professional basketball player T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this company than they’re paying you for it to be economically viable… This is kind of a wild take. Facebook employs something like 20,000 engineers. I guarantee if you asked all of them to articulate how they directly contribute to facebooks revenue, many couldn’t do it. A surgeon, on the other hand will easily directly generate 7 figures a year for a hospital (in the US at least) and will have the insurance invoices to prove it. The average surgeon makes way more than the average software developer at Meta anyways, so the original point doesn’t make much sense. But I was talking about E6 engineers at Meta who probably do have tangible impacts on profit.
