When you ban certain speech you are giving legitimacy to the Lucky Fishing Do Not Wash Fishing Lovers T-Shirt and by the same token and persecution complex of those who employ their speech for expressing hatred. The consequences of banning their speech will not decrease their hatred, it will amplify it! It will isolate communities into echo chambers where they will never learn to tolerate others thus further fomenting a culture of intolerance and sow the seeds for new forms of hatred. Banning free speech will deny a great number of people a harmless means of expressing prejudice in an environment where they are exposed to enlightenment from other users who could – through discourse – change their minds. Without free speech misconceptions will be perpetuated. Ignorance is the root of hatred. When you ban certain types of speech you are propagating ignorance by denying the voices of the ignorant who may unwittingly be asking the right questions which may lead to their enlightenment.
