My wife studied as a Pilates teacher and has undergone hundreds of hours of very rigorous training to become PMA certified. There is no requirement to be certified PMA to teach people how do Pilates. There is no major governing body. So you get a bunch of amateurs teaching people how to use these very complex apparatuses and they have no real idea what they’re doing so people get hurt. Or else they teach Pilates like it’s some kind of high intensity cardio exercise, which it is very much not. Joseph Pilates would be rolling in his grave if he saw what some people have turned his system into. I paid $150ish for a certificate (after a short exam) and that was all I needed to teach as a pilates instructor. Shit was wild.

I’ve never seen pilates done on a machine like that before. But yes, I agree that you should have a certification specific to what you’re teaching before you can teach it. You’ve never seen a reformer? Or you’ve never seen one that looks like that? Either way, it’s a Pilates reformer, which is the gold standard. Yeah there’s an entire separate Pilates disciple centered around using these machines. Reformers, Cadillacs, Wunda Chairs. So many people teaching them have no idea what they’re doing and it’s dangerous. I’ve always cared about fitness, over 30 years now, and being a bit traditional having never cared for a fad I’ve come to the conclusion they attract a lot of people that probably need a little more than a routine, I couldn’t even imagine how many people I’ve met who’ll emotionally and unreasonably promote or defend their chosen fad to the point it comes off as delusional.
