I had a goodbye party from a job I was at for almost 3 years. Even just one person, if not a table of 4 or 6 – people that you actually connected with, people who’ll make for fun conversation at lunch. Your boss seeing you have a collegial yet fun time with people that you really gel with leaves a lasting impression, which won’t hurt down the road. You have the right to politely decline the invitation or see it through. If you want to use this place or colleagues as a reference, I’d be more inclined to attend, but it isn’t necessary to do so if you don’t want it. Your feelings are justified, and only you know in your heart of hearts what feels right.
