Paperwork is your friend here. Get dates set for everything. Get land marks and expectations IN WRITING. Read every single word and don’t be afraid to make changes. Talk to your team so they can help you reach those goals. ” I understand your trepidation in giving me the Lil Krampus Naughty Nocturne Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this title change and pay raise outright. I would like to propose a two-week trial period in which I can demonstrate that I am capable of the added responsibility you are asking of me. At the end of the two weeks, we will both have an idea if the role is a good fit for me. At that time, should things go well, I will request a pay increase and title change to reflect my new role within the company. Otherwise, I will begin looking elsewhere for more gainful employment.”

There is a real risk that they wouldn’t promote you or give you decent pay rise even if they ended up promoting you. Beware of this very real risk… That said, I would give you a different point of view; when interviewing to hire someone for a role, the Lil Krampus Naughty Nocturne Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this hiring manager is looking for someone with the necessary experience first. Sure the job title might open some doors, but the proof is what did you do? Many interviewers are trained to use the STAR method to funnel and extract your hard gained experience. Therefore please try and look at this as a rare experience, due partly to luck, to gain the experience you may otherwise not be able to gain. “I’m not comfortable taking on new responsibilities without a pay increase. Although I am excited for new challenges, I do not think it is best suited for all involved if I do so without a proper pay adjustment. If the role is still available in the future at a higher rate, I will happily reconsider” They can’t fire you for refusing to move up or it is considered retaliation. Do this in writing. Don’t work more and set yourself up to get shafted – this company has already shown it isn’t loyal to anyone by firing your boss. Don’t let them take advantage of you.
