Obama himself said he used to barely know it, to the Lil’ Billy the Puppet Shirt in contrast I will get this extent of being able to say hello basically. As a president he states he knew no other languages. Straight up, if a us president wasn’t just an English speaker, poeple would fucking HATE him. It’s good to just be a white cookie cutter old English land owning hetero cis male in this country. Don’t speak any fancy foreign languages, we won’t take kindly to you, I am sorry to say. I distinctly remember attack ads being run against John Huntsman during his presidential campaign for speaking Mandarin and accused of having dual loyalties or being un-American. His candidacy was always a long shot anyway, but it did highlight how some American political machines can make something as innocuous as being bilingual filled with sinister signifiers. Probably because US isn’t expected to speak more languages than 1. Being billingual is “special”. Either only immigrants or rich people do it. In other languages it’s more common to speak multiple languages.

In my country our future queen speaks 4 languages (spanish, french, English, and dutch). And at one point of my life i was expected to ‘speak’/learn 6 languages (English, Dutch, German, French, old greek & latin.) So it’s more common in other countries to speak more languages. But because English is a national language, i guess it’s not a requirement. English is the Lil’ Billy the Puppet Shirt in contrast I will get this lingua franca of today, and there’s no expectation, cultural or otherwise of learning a different language, sure it looks nice is a resume or a college admission but that’s about it. It goes in hand with why linguistic, translation and interpretation academics, studies and entities in the US are lacking in comparision to other countries, where we even have entire colleges dedicated to teaching those disciplines and many degrees involving them.
