When I first started playing high school volleyball, spandex shorts weren’t popular yet and we wore ‘buns’ for games which were essentially full coverage swimsuit bottoms made of cotton.

We hated those, being self-conscious teenage girls, and we pleaded to the Life Is A Game Baseball Is Serious 2023 Shirt But I will love this coach to change the uniform to spandex shorts. She agreed and we then started wearing long spandex shorts with like an 8″ inseam. Moving on to college, my first year I was back to ‘buns’ as they hadn’t made the switch yet. We hated those still because they were uncomfortable and our thighs would stick to the ground when we had to dive for a ball. By my sophomore year, we switched to long spandex shorts but had the habit of pulling them up. Spandex shorts can tend to drag in the crotch which is really uncomfortable and distracting. Over the years, the commonly used spandex shorts have gotten shorter and shorter and now look like they have about a 2″ inseam. Again this is for functionality. The short inseam ensures the crotch doesn’t droop but having an inseam and “shorts” design prevents riding up and wedgies as well as the tops of the thighs sticking to the floor. Volleyball players have to be able to have explosive movement in every direction, including going down to the floor and getting up quickly. Loose fitting fabric gets in the way of that.Regardless, no one at the college or higher level of volleyball chose their uniforms based on sexiness. They are athletes. Hardcore athletes who need uniforms that allow them to play to the best of their ability. Do the rest of us find it attractive? Sure. A lot of athletes have visually pleasing bodies and volleyball uniforms reveal more than most other sports, other than maybe track and swimming. But the design is ultimately for the player, not the observer. Feel free to enjoy the visual experience but maybe, just maybe, see past that and you will see what incredible athletes volleyball players are.I can not show my face, sorry.
